The Memory Keeper by Jenny Hale

The Memory Keeper has wonderful characters!

I think Gran was my favorite character throughout the book. She has such a positive, sweet heart. Despite spending the majority of the book in a hospital, she was so encouraging to Hannah and full of life. One of her biggest worries was that her flower shop, The Memory Keeper, would have to close. I think this woman was in her 90s and still running her own shop!!

I connected with Hannah right away in the beginning. She’s turning 35 as the story starts (same age as I’m about to turn at the end of the year). She breaks up with her cheating boyfriend and drives home to Franklin, Tennessee to be with her sick Gran. When I started reading, I knew something was going to happen with the scummy boyfriend. Everything was too happy and perfect for him to not end up being a jerk.

But then we meet Liam. Liam was a teenage crush of Hannah’s and it just so happens that he thought ahead and rented a car. While all airlines are grounded and rental companies are running out of vehicles, he has the means to get Hannah (and Georgia – who is looking for her birth parents in Franklin) home. Georgia was another favorite of mine throughout The Memory Keeper. She’s just a dog mom who’s looking to find her family.

Hannah Townsend’s life is just as she’s always wanted it to be. She has the perfect job at a New York magazine, a small but elegant apartment in the upper west side, and an incredibly successful beau named Miles Monahan. This year, for her thirty-fifth birthday, she’s leaving the icy city sludge for sunshine! She’s got tickets for two to Barbados, and she’s all packed and meeting Miles at the airport for a week of cocktails, sandy beaches, and the music of steel drums.

But her life is turned upside down in the span of that one morning. Hannah is rocked by the news that her beloved grandmother is very sick, and Hannah needs to come home to her small Tennessee town right away to be with her family and help run her gran’s dilapidated flower shop. It also means she has to face Ethan Wright, the best friend she’d left behind so many years ago. If that isn’t enough to deal with, she discovers her boyfriend is seeing someone else.

With flights grounded and rental cars in great demand due to the winter snowstorm, she’s stranded at the airport. On her birthday, instead of waking up in a stylish beachfront hotel in Miles’s arms like she thought, she finds herself packed like sardines into a car, with two passengers, on a ride-share from LaGuardia Airport to her hometown of Franklin, Tennessee.

When everything seems to be going wrong, it’s the kindness of a handsome businessman from Hannah’s past named Liam McGuire that might just save her. But a new development that threatens Gran’s shop and secrets surrounding Liam could alter both their lives forever.

What a sense of family!

I loved the sense of family that Jenny Hale incorporated into The Memory Keeper. The importance of never giving up on your dreams was a very strong theme. And Hannah’s family is supporting not only her, but Georgia through the entire book. Hannah also helps reconnect Liam with his own son. Family is extremely important to these people.

Throughout the book, Hannah is reading her Gran’s journal (a birthday present to her), reliving Gran’s life before she married Pop-pop (Hannah’s grandfather). The two stories overlapped perfectly and I think, at times, I was just as entranced by Gran’s life as Hannah was.

Narration by Melie Williams – 5 Stars!

Melie Williams does a wonderful job narrating The Memory Keeper. This is my first time listening to anything she has narrated and I was seriously impressed with the way she brings the characters to life and gives everyone their own personality, instead of them sounding like cardboard copies of each other. Most of the characters in this book have southern accents and her portrayal of them sounded very natural. As for the speed – I was able to run this audiobook at the normal 1.25x speed that I like to use while listening and everything still sounded natural (where some narrators tend to sound rushed at higher speeds).

A New Auto-Buy Author

This is the first I’ve read of Jenny Hale’s books but I am hooked! I love her writing style and how easy her plots are to get sucked into. I’ve been in a major reading slump for the past 4 or 5 months and I read 160 pages of this book in one evening. I sat down to read and just couldn’t put it down.

Final Answer for The Memory Keeper?

Jenny Hale is a wonderfully skilled author and I can’t wait to binge-read all of her other books that I can get my hands on! The Memory Keeper is a must-read for any romance fans, or fans of contemporary books that really pull at your heartstrings. This book has worked its way onto my Top Reads of 2021 list!
